8 Top Notch Information Resources for Small Businesses

As a small business owner and content creator, I’m always looking for resources that will help me improve my own business, and provide insight into the latest developments, innovations, tools and guidance on financial and tax matters.  Over time, I have bookmarked a list of the resources that I visit frequently:

1. Canada.ca – Business and Industry

The federal government’s main business portal covers starting, financing, managing, and growing your business. You’ll find guides on registering your business, accessing funding programs, understanding regulations, and more.

👉 Visit Canada.ca Business and Industry

2. CRA Small Business and Self-employed Guide

If you run a business or are self-employed in Canada, the CRA’s dedicated guide is essential reading. It explains your tax obligations, how to register for GST/HST, payroll basics, and what you can deduct.

👉 Visit CRA Small Business and Self-employed Guide

3. Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)

BDC offers financing solutions and expert advisory services for Canadian SMEs, plus a wealth of free resources like business plan templates, industry research, and guides relating to marketing, financial management and more.

👉 Visit BDC Articles and Tools

4. Financial Post Small Business Section

A Canadian business publication with a dedicated section for small businesses, lots of relevant articles about tax legislation, case studies and managing your finances .

👉 Visit Financial Post Entrepreneur

5. Futurpreneur Canada

Futurpreneur specializes in supporting young entrepreneurs (aged 18–39) with financing and mentorship. But even if you’re outside that demographic, their free business plan writer and online resources are well-designed and useful for anyone.

👉 Visit Futurpreneur Resources

6. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED)

ISED (formerly Industry Canada) provides in-depth guidance on market research, intellectual property, regulations, and programs that support innovation. A good resource to peruse for businesses looking to grow or launch new products.

👉 Visit ISED Business Resources

7. The Globe and Mail Small Business Section

Another Canadian publication that has regularly updated articles for small businesses including tax, how to manage finances and relevant news. The one downside is that some of the more interesting articles are behind a paywall.

👉 Visit Globe and Mail Small Business

8. Montreal Financial Blog & Resources

And of course, there is my own blog and YouTube channel which has numerous resources, focused on helping Canadian small business owners, freelancers, and the self employed navigate accounting, taxes, and finance.

Final Thoughts

While these are some of the resources I find helpful, there are numerous others that cater to Canadians. In addition to blogs, articles and youtube channels, there are a number of X and Instagram accounts that provide finance insights in more digestible snippets.
